However, I am here to tell you that it is not as easy as it sounds. To shed those last few stubborn pounds you have to take a different approach than most.

I have struggled for many years trying to shed the pounds. I tried to go on crash diets and really bad detox programs. All of these things worked for a while but my body always went back to being addicted to nicotine. In fact, after I went off of those programs I gained the weight back again!

When I think about the amount of time I was spending to feel bad about myself because of smoking, it becomes clear that I had to do something different if I wanted to lose weight and get healthier. The problem was my mind. I thought that smoking was the only thing that could help me accomplish my goals. This was a mental hurdle that I had to overcome. If I believed that smoking was all that I needed to become healthy, I would have continued to smoke and would have continued to gain weight and have avoided any attempts to quit.

The first step I had to take when I realized that smoking was not what I needed was to change the way I was thinking about smoking. One way to change your thinking is to find something in the world that makes you happy. Something that will energize your body and keep you focused on what's important in your life. Once you find this something or situations in your life that makes you happy, you have to actively pursue it so that you don't miss out on it while you quit.

A lot of people who try to quit smoking often find themselves craving cigarettes. This is normal and the withdrawals won't stop until you eliminate cigarettes from your life. If you are one of these people, do yourself a favor and make sure to eat properly and exercise daily. By eating properly you will be boosting your metabolism and exercising will burn off calories that you are now consuming through your smoking. Exercise will help you stay focused and motivated when you realize that you are not able to lose weight after you quit.

As with most things in life, if it works for someone, it doesn't mean it will work for you. I did not lose weight by stopping smoking, but I am certain that my health has improved tremendously since I quit. My blood pressure is lower now, I no longer sleep as much as I used to, and I am more aware than I was before I stopped smoking.

The reason is that smoking is a physical addiction and nothing more than that. You can become addicted to something else, such as drugs, alcohol or sugar, but with smoking there is no physical dependence. By taking steps to reduce stress, reduce the amount of junk food and caffeine you have in your system and by changing your lifestyle you will be well on your way to a healthier you.
